How big can a dolphin get?
The average is 8’2” long and between 400 to 570 lbs of weight, but the largest bottlenose dolphins can get about 9’ feet long and weigh up to 660 lbs.

 How long does a dolphin live?
Bottlenose dolphins can live to over 30 years of age and some studies have aged individuals at up to 50 years old.

How long can a dolphin hold its breath while diving?
Dolphins can hold their breath for up to 12 minutes. A bottlenose dolphin’s average respiratory rate is about two to three breaths per minute.

 How much does a dolphin eat per day?
Dolphins eat approximately 4% to 5% of their body weight in food per day. They eat, between 17 to 35 lbs per day.

Dolphins have shown language comprehension abilities. Dolphins produce clicks and sounds that resemble moans, trills, grunts, squeaks, and creaking doors. They also produce whistles. They make these sounds at any time and at considerable depths. The sounds vary in volume, wavelength, frequency, and pattern.

How far can dolphin's see?
Dolphins have acute vision both in and out of the water. In clear waters, approximately 656 ft.

What is the difference between pectoral fins and the dorsal fin?
Pectoral fins are curved back slightly and pointed at the tips. Dolphins use their pectoral flippers mainly to steer. Pectoral flippers have the major skeletal elements of the forelimbs of land mammals, but they are foreshortened and modified. The back fin is like the keel of a boat, that gives stability while they swim and unlike the pectoral fins this one does not have any bony structure, but woven connective fibrous tissue, that gives it form and firmness.

They can reach speeds up to 40 kmph or 25 mph.

There are 36 different species.



How many calves can a female dolphin bear?
A female dolphin can potentially bear one calf every two years, but calving intervals generally average at three years and they will not have twins.
